Accessibility Support

Homeowner.ca is committed to ensuring that our content and services are accessible to all Canadians, including people with disabilities who use assistive technologies such as screen readers, magnification software, voice recognition, or alternative input devices.

We strive to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at the AA level, as well as the accessibility requirements set out in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) and the Accessible Canada Act.

Our Commitment

We believe that accessible design benefits all users, not only those with disabilities. Our accessibility efforts include:

  • Semantic HTML structure — We use proper heading hierarchy, landmarks, and meaningful page structure to support screen readers and other assistive technologies.
  • Keyboard navigation — All interactive elements on the Site are designed to be operable using a keyboard alone, without requiring a mouse or trackpad.
  • Text alternatives — Images and visual content include descriptive alternative text where appropriate to convey meaning to users who cannot see them.
  • Colour contrast — We aim for sufficient colour contrast between text and background elements to meet WCAG AA standards, supporting readability for users with low vision or colour vision deficiencies.
  • Responsive design — The Site is designed to function across a range of screen sizes and devices, including mobile phones, tablets, and desktop computers.
  • Clear language — We aim to write in plain, clear Canadian English that is accessible to readers of varying literacy levels and backgrounds.
  • Focus indicators — Interactive elements display visible focus indicators to support keyboard navigation.

Known Limitations

We are continuously working to improve the accessibility of Homeowner.ca. While we strive for full conformance, some areas may have limitations:

  • Third-party content — Some embedded content from third-party providers (such as retailer product widgets or video players) may not fully meet accessibility standards. These elements are governed by the respective third party's accessibility practices.
  • PDF documents — If any downloadable documents are provided on the Site, some may not yet be fully accessible. If you need an accessible version of any document, please contact us and we will provide one.
  • Older content — As we update existing content over time, some older pages may not yet fully conform to current accessibility standards. We are working to address this progressively.

Reporting an Accessibility Barrier

If you encounter an accessibility barrier on Homeowner.ca — whether it is a page that does not work with your assistive technology, content that is difficult to read or navigate, or any other issue that prevents you from accessing our content — we want to hear from you.

When reporting an accessibility issue, it is helpful to include:

  • The page URL where you encountered the barrier
  • A description of the issue — what you were trying to do and what happened
  • The assistive technology you are using (e.g., screen reader name and version, magnification software, voice recognition)
  • Your browser and operating system (e.g., Chrome on Windows 11, Safari on macOS)

This information helps us reproduce and resolve the issue more quickly.
